Jordan and Ashley

Ashley and Jordan’s wedding day was a dream! The weather was perfect, despite the rain and hot weather leading up to their beautiful Sunday wedding. The location was gorgeous and cozy and they had local beers! Not only did they have local beer, but the food served at the reception was made with local ingredients as well. Most of their guests were from out of state, so they truly got a taste of Richmond while attending one of the most fun weddings I have planned for the 2017 season!
From the very start, Ashley and Jordan were a joy to work with. They were good at making important decisions, had a vision in mind and Jordan was such an involved groom! I mean, he even did the light installation in the courtyard. Jordan works for a company that does lighting for huge events and he was able to show off his work for his own wedding, how cool is that? Ashley’s main color was deep purple with hints of gold and neutrals. I love this color scheme for fall and it brought so much life to the courtyard of Linden Rowe.
Ashley and Jordan were so much fun! The most important thing to them was the commitment they were making to each other and that their guests would have a great time! I am certain that their guests had a fantastic time because I did!! It’s hard not to enjoy yourself when you’re surrounded by great people, an awesome line up of vendors, a phenomenal DJ and yummy food! Urban Farmhouse is the in-house caterer for Linden Rowe. They are a business that uses local ingredients to make all of their delicious food. Their team was great and their head guy was so much fun to work with. The fantastic pictures were taken by Don Mears and once again, I am amazed by his work. He even saved my assistant, Kaitlyn and I by getting us Cokes from down the street.  I couldn’t forget about Paisley & Jade. Personally, I think there’s never a time or event when their stuff shouldn’t be there. It makes every occasion come together and look perfect! When I have fun at a wedding because of the awesome couple, great vendors and amazing guests, it makes me love my job even more.
Ashley and Jordan, thank you for trusting me on one of the most important days of your life. Your wedding was gorgeous, the party was fun (even for those of us working!!), your guests were so entertaining, the food was fantastic and working with all of your other vendors was a dream. Ashley, your bridesmaids were the sweetest and incredibly helpful. I could tell that they were all thrilled to witness you marry your best friend. You looked absolutely stunning and I never saw you without a huge smile on your face! Jordan, your groomsmen were hilarious and such gentlemen. You were so relaxed and the way you looked at Ashley the entire evening was so endearing.
I wish you both a life full of happiness, joy and so many adventures! Thank you for making the last Hannah Marie Events wedding of the season so perfect and fun! It was truly a wedding I’d repeat again.

Resart

This week I decided to restart. It’s been a very busy season with 1 funeral, 5 weddings, and two more left in the last 2 months along with countless meetings and my other side jobs. I took Laura Foote’s advice and cleaned, organized, decluttered and made my room (since I don’t own a home) feel fresh again! As I have mentioned before, I lived in Radford for most of the last 4 years while I studied for my Communication degree. While I definitely had a smaller space while I was in school, I managed to acquire a lot of stuff. A lot. Whether it was clothes, décor, furniture, storage containers…you name it, I had it. Since moving back home, my stuff has been in all areas of my parent’s house except for the extra furniture, that was placed in a storage unit! This week I decided that with the cooler temperatures, I needed to get out all of my fall clothes.
I brought down all 5 containers from the attic and realized that this wasn’t just going to be a quick change out of clothes but instead a massive clean out and organization week. I’m honestly wondering how all of my fall clothes fit in my room of my college apartment, but then I remembered that my closet actually broke twice while in my senior year. Like the rod literally broke off the wall the first time and the second time the rod broke. My minimalist roommate kindly yelled at me to “get rid of all that crap”. Fast forward to now, where my closest has much more space! I spent 3 days throwing stuff away, going through everything that had accumulated over 4 years of living back and forth, making a pile of donation clothes and cleaning. It was exhausting but, you know what? I feel SO much better!! Even though I have two more weddings, am applying for jobs, working my other jobs, and trying to have a social life with my friends, I feel incredibly less stressed out!
If you’re feeling stressed and your brain is way too cluttered for your own good, take a day or 3 to clean. You could choose one room or your whole house/apartment and I garuntee you’ll be much better and more productive!

My Communication Degree got me where I am.

I’ve touched on this in the past but I wanted to dive into it a little more. For those of you who don’t know, I graduated from Radford University this past May. I majored in Communication and minored in Marketing but my job is a Wedding Planner. The most common question I get when people either ask me what I majored in, knowing my career or ask me what my job is, knowing my major, is why? Why did you choose that? Why didn’t you pick Hospitality or Event Management? Why did you choose wedding planning, is it just because you think they’re pretty? Do you really think you’ll be able to do that? Wow, you’re brave, you deal with bridezillas!! But you’re so young…and on and on.
            I think the last one might just be my favorite. There is a stigma about age correlating with success and validity and I’m not too sure where it came from. I think we are all guilty of this in some way or another. I tend to be surprised when I know a 21-year-old who is super successful at his/her job, owns a flat in Short Pump, VA, and is not just successful but also passionate about his/her job. Too often I am asked why I chose what I did. I love answering this question when it’s asked by someone who is truly curious and hasn’t already made their own assumptions.
            I’ve been working hard the last 4 years to make my dream come true. I started assisting a company in the New River Valley my freshman year at Radford. Shortly after that, Katelyn Alsop connected me with Kat, the owner of Dear Sweetheart Events. I think I’m going to start calling Kat my fairy Godmother because instead of just sending me a nice email about her tips and tricks to becoming a successful wedding planner, she asked me if I’d want to assist her with one of her weddings!! I couldn’t say yes fast enough, I was honestly thrilled and honored.
Fast forward 3 years later, and here I am.  
            I booked 5 weddings in the first 6 months of being in business. 4 that would happen in the year 2017, and one for 2018. I did 6 weddings on my own by September 17th, 4 of mine and 2 on my own with Dear Sweetheart Events brides. I am currently talking with two more brides for 2018 AND 2019. Someone who I have never met has confidence in my business that I will be her planner in 2019. You know what question was never asked during the process of booking these 5 weddings and talking to 2 more potential brides? My age. My education. My monetary value. These brides are looking for someone who is dedicated, works hard, can see their vision and can make the experience of hiring me worth their money and their time.
            While I know my experience is priceless, I also know that my degree helped me too. Yes, my Communication degree has helped me in the wedding industry. Three courses I took in my last semester of college were unexpectedly my favorite classes I took in all my four years. I took a nonverbal communication class solely because I had the professor a few other times and wanted to take a class with her again! Ms. Kennan taught 3 classes I took plus my internship and I fully enjoyed all of them. But do you know how important it is to understand nonverbal communication in a profession where you are making sure the most special day is absolutely perfect? When the mother says “it looks good” but her arms are crossed and she won’t make eye contact, you need to know that something needs to be done to make it look even better!! I can tell when a bride is overwhelmed just by her facial expression and I give credit to that class, 100%.
            All couples are different, don’t you think? There’s diversity amongst different brides, diversity within the families and there’s diversity amongst the vendors. Can you tell where I’m going with this? Mrs. Webster taught an amazing class all about Diversity in Communication and not only did it teach me some valuable life skills but also how to go about the planning process and wedding day with so many different people around. You can’t talk to the DJ the same way you talk to the mother of the groom and communication with the caterer will surely be different from communication with the florist. A wedding that has a Jewish ceremony will be different from a wedding officiated by a friend of the family’s. As much as I love to learn from my own mistakes and experiences, I’m very grateful I was taught how to communicate in these particular situations.
            Last, but certainly not least, my business and professionalism class taught by Mrs. Herbert is a class I think every student should take. I own my own business, so of course, I need to know how to be professional and look legit. Mrs. Herbert was real and honest about how the “real world” works and taught us the do’s and don’t(s) of working in a big girl/boy job. I love the education I received from Radford and I don’t regret going to school to end up getting a dream job that doesn’t require an education.
            So why is it, that our society questions the attainability of a successful business in the creative world based on their age, experience, education, or monetary value but we put our faith into nurses who are 22 years old, doctors in debt and builders who majored in Teaching grades 3-5? Let’s support those who step out of the box and stop being predictable. Assumptions need to end and questions that are pure interest and not judgment need to be asked. I support and trust the 22-year-old checking my heart rate, the senior web designer who didn’t finish his college education and the mother of two who has her law degree and decided to stay home with her children to watch them grow. DSE Wedding- Amanda & D'Angelo

This Dear Sweetheart Events wedding was a perfect mix of feminine, classic and fun! Amanda and D’Angelo’s wedding was gorgeous! Their wedding was on a Tuesday in July, they had one of my favorite color palettes and they were such a cute couple! It could not have been any better! From the very start, Amanda was amazing to work with. Her eye for design, colors, and creativity made it so much fun! Amanda chose blush and ivory as her main colors and added pops of rose gold! The entire room looked beautiful and bright, it reflected her personality perfectly!
Two of my favorite aspects of Amanda’s wedding was why she picked her date and her beautiful one tier cake! I mentioned her wedding was on a Tuesday, and trust me I was just as surprised as you probably are reading this! The story behind it is not only beautiful but extremely clever and could only be thought of by an intelligent individual, such as Amanda! Their date was 7/11/17. Every number in the sequence is a prime number, prime numbers can’t be equally divided, so she wanted her date to be a number that couldn’t be equally divided in the hopes that her marriage would also never be divided. The non-math brain in me immediately thought how I would never think that way, that’s just not the way my brain works! But then, I thought of how beautiful that is. Whenever I think about my future wedding I just dream of it being in the fall, on a crisp and cool Saturday! After hearing Amanda’s reasoning for her date, it makes me want to have a story like that behind the numbers.
As for her cake, Amanda with Sorby Sweet made a beautiful cake! I think my favorite part was that it looked like gold was spilling over the sides and I absolutely love gold! It was perfect for their cake cutting and I know it tasted just as good as it looked! For Amanda’s guests, she had Sugar Shack donuts which is by far my favorite donut shop, I may or may not have taken a leftover box home!!

Not only was this wedding a dream, but Amanda has become someone I can call a friend and that just might be my absolute favorite part of this whole wedding!
